for Employer Sponsors

The Provincial and Federal governments provide income tax credits, grants, and other financial support for employers with registered apprentices.  

 

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit for Red Seal Programs 

Employers who hire apprentices registered in Red Seal programs are eligible to claim 10% of wages up to a maximum of $2,000 per year for each apprentice, for the first 24 months of registration.

BC Basic Tax Credit for Non-Red Seal Programs 

Employers who hire apprentices registered in non-Red Seal programs are eligible to claim: 

  • 20% of wages up to a maximum of $4,000 per year for each apprentice, for the first 12 months of registration. 

  • 20% of wages up to a maximum of $4,000 per year for each apprentice, for the second 12 months of registration.

BC Completion Tax Credit 

Employers who hire apprentices are eligible to claim tax credits when those apprentices complete levels three and higher of technical training or work-based training hours, or receive a certificate (depending on the program) for their trade. 

 

Enhanced Tax Credit for Employers 

Employers of apprentices who are First Nations or who have disabilities may also be eligible for additional tax credits. 

 

B.C. Employer Training Grant 

The B.C. Employer Training Grant is an employer-driven, cost-sharing program that can help offset the expense of employee training. The grant covers up to two-thirds of the cost of training an employee, to a maximum of $10,000 per grant.

Apprenticeship Service

The Apprenticeship Service supports employers to hire new first-year apprentices in 39 Red Seal trades. Employment and Social Development Canada funds organizations that work with employers in the skilled trades.

The organizations give financial support to small and medium-sized employers to hire first-year apprentices:

  • $5,000 for each eligible new first-year apprentice hired

  • $10,000 if the apprentice hired is from an equity-deserving group

They also provide other supports to employers to help them take part in apprenticeship.
